In science, growth is the observed or measured increase and change in living and nonliving matter. In mathematics, growth is a numerical increase in an entity. Rates of growth can be measured in units of measure per unit of time.

Young children begin learning science by observing change in their surroundings when an action is taken or time has passed. Understanding how change occurs is a good opportunity to introduce time and spatial quantity as measurable factors (data) to be discussed in a mathematical sense.

Exploring growth stimulates children's interest in the skills and concepts that are essential to understanding both science and mathematics. As children explore growth they are practicing important math and science skills.
